Australian Poems That Would Baffle A Bandicoot

MODERN MOTHERS

(There used to be a regular feature in a weekly magazine called

'Nature Had It First.' I think that the subject of this poem could

fit into the same category!)

Concerning women's liberation
The emu is an inspiration!
For once the eggs are on the nest,
The mother emu takes a rest.
For father emu is the one
Who sees the family duty's done.
He sits on eggs for sixty days,
Then, he alone, will duly raise
For eighteen months the infant brood
Whilst mother rarely will intrude.
Though ancient birds compared with others,
The emu hens are modern mothers!
